IN A FEW WORDS

The story in focus

Isaias strengthened into the Atlantic season's first hurricane late on October 7, 2026, as NOAA's GOES East satellite tracked it over the Gulf of America. States of emergency were declared in parts of Alabama and Florida, with some mandatory evacuations ordered as the storm is forecast to keep strengthening.

  • Dropsonde data from Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunters indicated Isaias became a hurricane around 10:30 p.m. CDT on Wednesday, October 7.
  • Isaias is the latest first Atlantic hurricane on record since at least 1905, per NOAA.
  • States of emergency and some mandatory evacuation orders were issued in parts of Alabama and Florida.

A late first hurricane

According to a National Hurricane Center report cited by NOAA, dropsonde data from Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunters based at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Mississippi, indicated Isaias reached hurricane strength around 10:30 p.m. CDT on Wednesday, October 7, after becoming a tropical storm around 4:00 a.m. CDT that morning.

NOAA said the formation marks the latest first hurricane of the Atlantic season on record since at least 1905, when the season's first Atlantic hurricane also formed on October 7. Isaias is also the first Atlantic hurricane in nearly a year; the basin's previous hurricane, Melissa, formed on October 25, 2025.

Warnings and expected impacts

NOAA reports that states of emergency have been declared in parts of Alabama and Florida, where some mandatory evacuation orders have also been issued.

The agency attributes an unusually quiet Atlantic hurricane season in part to a strong El Niño, which can suppress tropical cyclone activity in the Atlantic and increase activity in the Pacific. Isaias is expected to continue strengthening as it approaches the northern Gulf Coast, with life-threatening storm surge, damaging hurricane-force winds and heavy rainfall expected across the region.

Satellite monitoring

The GOES East satellite, also known as GOES-19, uses its Advanced Baseline Imager to produce infrared and visible imagery of severe weather. The imagery referenced by NOAA was captured between October 7 and October 8, 2026.
